Long "e" at end of word

Why does the long "e" sound at the end of the word have to be spelled "ie?" Is this a rule of made-up-word grammar? Can't it be "y," or even "ee," if one isn't at all particular about spelling things phonetically?

    Oh. I don't think it does. I mean, what about, um, funny? It's not funnie. Or, um, I can't think of any.

    It's your word, you can spell it any way you want. You can even provide alternate spellings if you want to. Maybe they should have been meepsy and schmopopsy. Hmmm. That might be better.
